Stillwater Roach Groundbaits? What groundbait is recommended for roach on a stillwater, when you are using a swim-feeder? Colin Oakman says: Normal roach groundbaits would form the base of my mix, choosing Van Den Eynde Roach, Supermatch or Sensas Roach, Noire or Match Blend. If specifically after large roach I would consider brown crumb and something like Secret from Van Den Eynde, or Gros Gardens from Sensas. The important factors are not so much the groundbaits used, but how you mix it up, and therefore how it performs. It's important that your groundbait suits the way the fish are feeding during the session and therefore is in line with how you go about presenting your hook bait. The mix can range from damp and inactive (mixed the night before to negate the active ingredients), to dry and active (mixed on the day with just enough water to hold the mix in the feeder). What this means... Damp and inactive Fish feeding hard on the bottom, and in generally deeper water. Damp, but active Mixed on the day, the dampness will hold the majority of the mix in the feeder to the bottom, but the activity will then commence creating more of a cloud in the bottom 2-3 feet. A mix for generally deeper water, but with fish feeding in the last 2-3 feet of water. Dry and inactive Mixed the night before to remove active ingredients, and not re-wetted. (Possibly adding a little dry groundbait on the day). Ideal for shallower water when the fish are feeding on the bottom. Dry and active Mixed on the day with little water. Good for fishing in shallow water where fish are feeding In the bottom % half of water. Never feeder fish for roach without applying the usual roach-fishing rules of light lines, smaller hooks and light quiver tips to exaggerate the bite and reduce the resistance to fish. If looking to catch off bottom, longer hook lengths and floating maggots as hook bait could improve the catch rate.
